This is my first blog using English, thus I hope you may forgive me if I make some mistakes on my first blog. Today I would like to talk about presentation in English. Most of college students and also employee usually feel horrible if they have to do presentation in English specially when they have to deal it in front of native speaker, this is because English is not our mother tongue. Here, I would like to give some tips how to make the presentation runs well.
- Talk naturally – avoid reading the whole material which you prepare on your power points. Basically the audience is more interested in listening your public talk or reading the material which you have prepared before, but one thing you should know, that they are inconvenient doing both listen and read at the same time.
- Audible voice and not too fast - If you are not a native, and you have limited vocabulary in English, make sure that your voice is clear enough to hear and please don't speak too fast. Speak constantly will give you spare time to arrange the next sentence which you will say.
- Make as simple as possible - having limited vocabulary doesn't mean that you can't make an effective presentation. try to make as simple sentence as possible, don't use confusing words.
- Stand, rather than sit, and move around a little – but avoid pacing backwards and forwards like a trapped animal.
- Gesture - this body language will help you to handle your nervous while doing your public talk.Move your hand to support your speaking, if in your sentence there is a number, try to support it by showing it with your fingers.
- Make eye contact with your audience. Do not stare at your feet, or the podium and avoid looking directly at any one person for more than a few seconds, gain eye contact with the individual members of the audience.
- Prepare and structure your presentation carefully. Introduce the subject – tell the audience what your talk is about. Explain the points you wish to convey. End with a summary of your points.
- Stay focused - don't talk any irrelevant point, unless you want to entertainment the audience, you may make a joke sometimes in the middle of your presentation, it is necessary to break the ice between you and the audience and assure that they are still interested in your presentation, but you should stay focused on your presentation material.
- Answer any questions honestly. In the question section, when there is an audience asks you about your presentation, try to answer it honestly, give the answer as clear as possible and If you don’t know the answer then say so and offer to provide further information at a later date.
- Apologizing to audience if necessary- if you do have to apologize for something, make the apology briefly and clearly,
and if possible try to make light of it (unless it's really serious of course).
It is normal to make mistakes, and even the
most experienced professional speakers and presenters make mistakes, so
just relax and keep calm if (when) you make one.
