Six types of collocation

http://inglesnapontadalingua.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Collocation-e-Phrasal-Verbs-870x270.jpg
Hello friend,
It’s my pleasure to meet you again on my article. I hope that you are not going to be bored reading my article…..:)
The first time I heard about the word “collocation” is when I got test applying my first job as English tutor. I didn’t know what the meaning was at that time, how ashamed I was knowing that I didn’t know anything about collocation, but the weird is, I could answer it with my intuition and my hatch, hahahha…. I am smiling when I remember that time.
Now, after that experience, I was curious about what collocation was. I had been looking from every source which explains about this “collocation”.

What is collocation?
This is the meaning of “collocation” according to Cambridge dictionary:

1.     “a word or phrase that is often used with another word or phrase, in a way that sounds correct to people who have spoken the language all their lives, but might not be expected from the meaning.”
2.     “The combination of words formed when two or more words are often used together in a way that sound correct”

Why should we learn?

Knowing collocation will improve your English speaking and writing skill because:
  • Using wrong collocation is an error.
  •  Using correct collocation will show the level of your English, the better you use collocation, the better your English will be.
  •  Using correct collocation makes your English more like a native speaker.

What techniques can we use to help us learning collocation?

  • Read newspaper, magazine or even story in English.
  •  As you read, connect the keywords and make a line between them.
  • Use different highlighters for every type of collocation.
  •  Write down the example which you find from the article onto your notebook.
  •  Organize your collocation list into its pattern, which I show you below.

How many types of collocation in English?
Well…. According to my information which I have read, there are six main types of collocation, they are:

1.     Adjective + noun
There are many adjective which can gather with noun, but I will write some adjectives to give you obvious example. Here are the examples of collocation adjective + noun
Ø He has been a heavy smoker and drinker all his adult life.
Ø She speaks English quite well but with strong French accent.
Ø They have a hard life and worked through a hard time. We don’t have hard evidence that they had used hard drugs.
Ø The doctor ordered him to take regular exercise.
Ø The Titanic sank on its maiden voyage.

2.     Noun + noun (such as collective noun)
Ø I would like to buy two bars of soaps
Ø There is a glass of water on the table.
Ø Would you like to have a cup of coffee?
Ø He will give a bar of chocolate to his girlfriend on Valentine ’s Day.
Ø Her bouquet of flower is the best of all

3.     Verb + noun
Ø I always try to do my homework in the morning after making my bed
Ø Do you think the bank would forgive a debt?
Ø We are going to have lunch together, would you like to join??
Ø Every day, I take a shower at 6 o’clock

4.     Adverb + adjective
Ø This test is ridiculously easy! I didn’t even study, but I will get high score.
Ø Janet is a highly successful businesswoman. She owns several restaurants and hotels around the country.
Ø That is utterly ridiculous. She didn’t steal your favorite book. She wasn’t even in the office yesterday.
Ø Roger is strongly opposed to anything bad for health. He doesn’t eat junk food at all.
Ø Are you okay? I am deeply concerned about you. You have been desperate since you lost your job.

5.     Verbs+ prepositional phrase (phrasal verb)
Ø Their behavior was enough to drive anybody to crime
Ø We had to return home because we had run out of money
Ø I am going to look up the meaning in the dictionary
Ø She is going to dress up for her first date with him.
Ø You have to make up your mind before doing something.

6.     Verb +adverb
Ø Mary whispered softly in John’s ear.
Ø The boy speaks politely, and is very well-behaved.
Ø The accident happened because he was driving dangerously.
Ø After 2 years in London, he speaks English fluently.
Ø I waited patiently, but she never came.

Well…. I think it is enough for me to write about collocation, I hope that we will meet again on my next article.

10 Peribahasa Bahasa Inggris (Bagian 1)

Or in English proverb is collection of wise words that offer good advice which usually our ancestor say about how to live our life.

Dibawah ini adalah peribahasa penting yang dapat kita gunakan dalam kehidupan sehari- hari baik dalam percakapan ataupun secara tulisan.

1.     “Better late than never”
Peribahasa atau pepatah ini sangat sering kita dengar dan tidak asing lagi ditelinga kita, proverb ini mengandung arti, baik bila kita melakukan sesuatu tepat waktu, namun jika kita tidak melakukan tepat waktu, maka terlambat itu kebih baik daripada tidak sama sekali.

2.     “A picture is worth a thousand words.”
Kadangkala kita tidak dapat mengatakan  dengan jelas apa yang kita ingin sampaikan, itulah mengapa memperlihatkan gambar atau foto lebih dapat menggambarkan apa yang ingin kita sampaikan.

3.     “There’s no such things as a free lunch”
Tak ada yang gratis didunia ini bung…. Hahahha, proverb ini sangat tepat untuk keadaan zaman sekarang ini, dimana kita tak akan mendapatkan sesuatu tanpa membayar. Ingatlah bahwa segala sesuatu yang ditawarkan gratis pasti menpunyai maksud tersembunyi.

4.     “The early bird catches the worm”
Nah… proverb ini cocok untuk mereka yang sering bangun siang…. Malas banun pagi, karena proverb ini mengandung arti “jika ingin sukses, maka sebaiknya kau bangun pagi” atau dalam peribahasa Indonesia “ bangun pagi biar rezeki tak dipatok ayam”

5.     “No man is an island”
Proverb ini cocok untuk mengatakan bahwa kita tak dapat hidup sendirian didunia ini, pasti kita akan membutuhkan oranglain, karena kita adalah makhluk yang memerlukan sosialisasi.

6.     “People who live in glass house shouldn’t throw stones”
Jangan mengkritik orang lain jika kamu sendiri bukanlah orang yang sempurna, kira kira itulah arti dari proverb yang satu ini.

7.     “Birds of a feather flock together”
Orang orang yang mempunyai sifat yang sama, biasanya akan berkumpul bersama, orang pintar akan berkumpul dengan orang pintar, mahasiswa yang popular akan berkumpul bersama dengan mereka yang popular juga, bahkan nerd (kutu buku) akan mencari perkumpulan yang sama sama kutu buku.

8.     “God helps those who help themselves”
Tuhan menolong siapa saja yang berusaha menolong dirinya sendiri, artinya janganlah mengharapkan pertolongan dari tuhan tanpa kita berusaha, berusaha dan bekerja keras untuk meraih tujuanmu.

9.     “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you”
Ini terutama ditujukan kepada mereka yang tak tau berterima kasih, jika kita bekerja kepada seseorang, atau ada orang yang membantu kita, sebaiknya kita tidak menjelek-jelekan mereka di belakang.

10.                        “Don’t put your eggs in one basket”

    Tips for Presentation

This is my first blog using English, thus I hope you may forgive me if  I make some mistakes on my first blog. Today I would like to talk about presentation in English. Most of college students and also employee usually feel horrible if they have to do presentation  in English specially when they have to deal it in front of native speaker, this is because English is not our mother tongue. Here, I would like to give some tips how to make the presentation runs well.
    • Talk naturally – avoid reading the whole material which you prepare on your power points. Basically the audience is more interested in listening your public talk or reading the material which you have prepared before, but one thing you should know, that they are inconvenient doing both listen and read at the same time.
    • Audible voice and not too fast - If you are not a native, and you have limited vocabulary in English, make sure that your voice is clear enough to hear and please don't speak too fast. Speak constantly will give you spare time to arrange the next sentence which you will say.
    •  Make as simple as possible - having limited vocabulary doesn't mean that you can't make an effective presentation. try to make as simple sentence as possible, don't use confusing words.
    • Stand, rather than sit, and move around a little – but avoid pacing backwards and forwards like a trapped animal.
    • Gesture - this body language will help you to handle your nervous while doing your public talk.Move your hand to support your speaking, if in your sentence there is a number, try to support it by showing it with your fingers.
    • Make eye contact with your audience.  Do not stare at your feet, or the podium and avoid looking directly at any one person for more than a few seconds, gain eye contact with the individual members of the audience.
    • Prepare and structure your presentation carefully.  Introduce the subject – tell the audience what your talk is about.  Explain the points you wish to convey.  End with a summary of your points.
      • Stay focused - don't talk any irrelevant point, unless you want to entertainment the audience, you may make a joke sometimes in the middle of your presentation, it is necessary to break the ice between you and the audience and assure that they are still interested in your presentation, but you should stay focused on your presentation material.
      • Answer any questions honestly.  In the question section, when there is an audience asks you about your presentation, try to answer it honestly, give the answer as clear as possible and If you don’t know the answer then say so and offer to provide further information at a later date.
      • Apologizing to audience if necessary- if you do have to apologize for something, make the apology briefly and clearly, and if possible try to make light of it (unless it's really serious of course). It is normal to make mistakes, and even the most experienced professional speakers and presenters make mistakes, so just relax and keep calm if (when) you make one.
